Each year Great Falls pays tribute to the late Wally Floen, a native Canadian and former Great Falls Americans' player (1958). In 1960, Wally joined the Spokane Comets followed by the Des Moines Oak Leafs. From 1970-1972, Wally played for the Las Vegas Gamblers and Reno Aces before settling in Great Falls to raise his family. In the mid-1980's Wally coached his son, Garth, as a pee wee and continued coaching and teaching Great Falls youth, including his grandson, until his death in October 2004. Wally helped many coaches over the years but one of the highlights of his career was helping coach the Great Falls Americans junior team so they could finish out their season in Great Falls.
Wally loved the game of hockey and emphasized the fundamentals of the game. His power skating classes were always well-attended and many young skaters were influenced by his expertise and dedication. Wally always believed that everybody deserved a chance to play.
The GF Americans Bantams hosted the Wally Floen Tribute Day during their home game on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 1:15 p.m.
